Abuja Residents Expect This From GMB's Administration
As
long queues for scarce fuel persist, and Nigeria’s economic outlook
remains grim, Nigerians’ hopes for the incoming administration of the
president‐elect Muhammadu Buhari only seem to soar.
Naij.com talked to some Abuja residents about what they would like to see change.
GMB should improve funding and reduce strikes in the health sector ‐ Doctor Iluwore Ignatius

I
think there is room for more improvement from the Goodluck
Administration. For some time now, we’ve had a system where there are
numerous strikes, lack of medical facilities, and lack of qualified
medical personnel for various medical positions. These strikes should be
reduced if not abolished, because strikes do us no good. If we keep on
going on strike, the people that will suffer are the masses. I expect
that with the government of Buhari, good things will come our way in
terms of funding for our tertiary institutions, national hospitals, and
teaching hospitals.
Problems of benefits for slain officers should be solved ‐ Police Sergeant John Achor
For the few years that Buhari was in power, he did a lot of things for us in the police force. So this time around, we pray and we know that everything will lead to success to Nigeria. I want him to change the system of the police and look into our problems,
because we have a lot
of problems. Some officers are being killed but it is a tug of war for
our families to get benefits. We want him to look into it, so that even
if we die in the process of the job, they will take very good care of
our families.
The new government should improve the freedom of the press ‐ Stellamaries Amuwa, journalist

We
wanted change and we now have the change. I personally expect steady
electricity and more jobs for the unemployed youths. I expect things in
the market to be cheaper and affordable. In media perspective, the media
should have access to whatever information is needed. The Freedom of
Information Bill has been passed, so let’s work according to what it
states. Let there be free access to information and freedom of the media
should be guaranteed.
Food items should be cheaper – Rabi Abubakar, Market woman

I
want the new government to do good for Nigerians. I want prices of
items to come down so people can patronize use very well and we can also
make sales and have gains.
Corruption in the education sector should be flushed – Nigerian Student

My
expectation for the incoming government of General Muhammadu Buhari is
to flush away corruption from the education sector. Anything you want to
do in school, you have to pay money. If you decide to do things the
right way by refusing to pay money, you will suffer for it one way or
the other. Students suffer from this because they end up spending more
than the years you are supposed to spend in an institution.
Another thing is that even the lecturers don’t come to class in most cases. Those that come will tell you that you must buy their text books. Those that cannot buy suffer for it, and for those that manage to buy, it affects their welfare financially. There is also need to look into curriculum of schools, from primary to tertiary institutions. The curriculum has not be used or practiced the way it should be. The number of persons in class also affects assimilation of lectures, so we will like the government to look into ensuring conducive learning environment.
Need to support poor students – Nigerian student, Nasarawa State University
I expect the incoming government to create an avenue where logistics and welfare will not be a hindrance to learning. People drop out of school not because they don’t have knowledge or interest but due to lack of adequate funding. The new government should map out a strategy that can help student go into the system properly, get the proper knowledge and come out to represent their country.
Tricycle riders should be allowed to thrive in Abuja – Keke Napep Riders

The
new government needs to eradicate the incessant clamp‐down on keke
napep riders. After all, it’s the same government that gave most of us
money to buy keke napep in order to eradicate poverty. As I am talking
to you, many of my colleagues have been arrested and their tricycle
seized for no justified reason. Even now, I have a tricycle at the VIO
office which was seized since last year and I was not allowed to bail it
out.

Riders
prayed for the incoming government of General Muhammadu Buhari to
succeed. We also plead with the incoming government to urge law
enforcement agencies to allow citizens go about their lawful businesses.
In a nutshell, we want the new government to be sincere and honest with road users and commuters like us.
Buhari emerged the winner of the March 28 presidential election beating the incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan. Nigerians are already expecting a whole lot from him as his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has promised them ‘change’.
