of staff of Daar Communications Plc, owners of African Independent
Television, (AIT), RayPower FM and Faaji FM yesterday shut down all
activities at it’s Benin station in protest over unpaid salaries.
AIT, Ray Power Staff Protest Over Unpaid Salaries
According to P.M News, the workers numbering about 50 blocked the main entrance to the station located along the Benin/Lagos bypass, but were stopped from breaking the law
by anti-riot policemen who were called by the
management of the station.
Sources revealed that the staffs were protesting because they are being owed salaries stretching up to 17 months.
A protester who pleaded anonymous said that new staffs of AIT were being owed 12 months while old staff were yet to be paid salary arrears between 13 months and staff of the Raypower FM, were owed 17 months.
The staff said , “The stations generate millions of naira on a daily basis, so there is no reason why we should not be paid our salaries. They have no excuse not to pay us our money. It is wickedness and man’s inhumanity to his fellow man.”
The Chairman of the organization, Mr. Raymond Dokpesi (Jnr) in reaction to the protest appealed for the staff to be calm, that the management would do everything possible to pay parts of their salary arrears within one week.
However he has allegedly threatened to pay-off any of the staff that decides to resign
The protest is another issue to hit Daar Communications. It was reported about two months ago that President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly barred AIT, from covering his activities.
