Yesterday at the Federal Palace Hotel in Ikoyi, the MTV Africa Music Awards held a party tagged 'Road to the MAMAs 2015'.
The party was attended by the biggest names the entertainment industry in Nigeria has to offer.
At the core of the event was the best of music Nigeria and Africa has to offer.
Kicking off with a lively and engaging set from DJ Xclusive, the 'Road to the MAMAs 2015' served as a lovely forerunner of the award ceremony in Durban.
Nigerian acts Iyanya, Lil Kesh, Yemi Alade, Phyno, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Patoranking and Diamond from Tanzania performed at the event.
1) Patoranking - Wha Ya Say! Patoranking had the best performance of the night. The Timaya protégé showed that he is now a lion in this game. The dancehall king in Nigeria performed all his hit tracks including the 2013 street anthem 'Emergency', and the fan favourite 'Bora'. His new single 'My Woman, My Everything' featuring Wande Coal wasn't left out. When the crowd thought Patoranking's fire hot set was over he brought the short black boy and new President of Chocolate City M.I to perform 'Enemies' off the rapper's last album 'The Chairman'. It didn't get hotter than that.
3) Phyno - The Igbo cowboy rode in majestic on the stage and kept spitting out his menacing rap singles which was a mix of his old and new cuts. Sporting a new 'David Beckham' inspired hairstyle gave a confident performance which the crowd absolutely loved. Towards the end of the set Phyno invited rap starlet Lil Kesh to perform their lewd collabo 'Ladi' minus Olamide. The floor of the venue shook when the rattling bass lines of Phyno's songs took over. Obago!
4) Lil Kesh - If Olamide is the King of Yoruba rap then surely Lil Kesh is the crown prince. A year ago at this same event, the newbie rap act opened up Olamide's set with his then buzzing street single/dance step inspired song 'Shoki'. A year after it went on to be one of the biggest hits of 2014. Rightfully so the success of the song earned him a nod at this year's event. Kesh's performance was embraced by the crowd. He just performed two songs 'Shoki' remix and 'Gbese' but it was enough to get the whole place lit. His performance of his verse on Ladi during Phyno's set showed that the streets have a new champion.
5) Reekado Banks/ Korede Bello - Even two out of seven Mavins is more than enough to have a good performance. That shows how many hit singles the acts on that label have. Fresh off their endorsement with GLO, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello ended the night performing their individual hits and rounding it with the crew's hit singles 'Adaobi', and 'Looku Looku'. The songs are crowd favourites so it was not a surprise to see people dancing throughout their set.
