It is now true that it is only in this part of the world that people suffer injustice and are thrown into jail for years without conviction by a competent court.
It also happens in the so called advanced countries as was revealed by Latest where a Las Vegas, USA man, Warren McClinton, spent six years in prison without being convicted of any crime.
McClinton who spent such long time in jail while awaiting trial, was charged, acquitted, and charged again for a number of sexual assault charges against a 14-year-old girl.
He was held on $130,000 bail, which neither he nor his family can pay.
According to Las Vegas Review Journal:
“McClinton now faces three counts of sexual assault with a minor younger than 16, three counts of open or gross lewdness and one count of battery with intent to commit sexual assault in connection with allegations from August 2008.
In 2009 a judge threw out an indictment against him because prosecutors failed to introduce certain evidence to a grand jury in a sexual assault case.”
But that did not stop him being thrown in jail as prosecutors argued that McClinton is a flight risk, pointing the fact that he’s used multiple aliases, failed to appear in court 39 times, and has a record in other states for offenses like domestic battery. McClinton has also fired nine attorneys, which has further delayed the court proceedings.
His current attorney, Ozzie Fumo, doesn’t deny his client’s checkered past with the law, but says that the majority of missed court appearances were due to “system errors” or tricks designed to make him miss the hearing.
