Sea pirate attacks remain a serious problem in parts of Nigeria, and a senior union official has spoke out against them with shocking claims.
The chairman of the Maritime Workers Union in Bayelsa state, Lloyd Sese, has spoken publicly about the gory details of the ordeal faced by boat drivers and pas$engers who are subjected to violent attacks from by sea pirates who secrete themselves along the waterways and creeks of the state.
Lyyod said that the victims of sea pirate attacks are being subjected to inhuman treatment including r@pe, maiming and killing.
Lloyd also said that the victims of these atrocities have been subjected to unsolicited prayer sessions during the robberies.
“What baffles us most is the fact that sea pirates spend over three hours rubbing one boat without any form of resistance from waterway security personnel.
“In some cases after robbing their helpless victims they even spend time raping women and even force their victims to conduct prayer session on board the boat before leaving.
“As far as we are concerned the situation has gone out of hand and it is time we invite the federal government to come to our aid.”
Sese went on to say that despite recent reports that marine security units had been deployed to the waterways by the state government, the sea pirates remain firmly in control of the waterways and creeks.
In a related incident, commercial boat driver Kemelayefa Gabriel said that sea the pirates had attacked and killed a 25-year-old man in the Bras$ waterways by shooting him in the head.
If the threat of sea pirates is not resolved soon, commercial boat drivers may resort to more direct action.
Back in August, the Maritime Workers Union threatened to go on strike in protest against the ongoing threat of sea pirates in Bayelsa state.
