At least 96 passengers have been reported dead after 14 carriages of an Indian express train derailed in northern Uttar Pradesh state at around 3am local time, 100km from the city of Kanpur.According to news report, so far 96 bodies have been recovered from the site with 300 passengers seriously injured, but the death toll is likely to rise as the rescue operation continues. A Passenger, Krishna Keshav, told the BBC:
“We woke with a jolt at around 3am. Several coaches were derailed, everybody was in shock. I saw several bodies and injured people.”
Indian Railways spokesperson Anil Saxena said:
“Senior officials and medical team have been rushed to the spot.
“We are in contact with the district officials officials.”
