A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court in Nasarawa State on Tuesday dissolved a 12-year-old marriage between Umar Aliyu and his wife Fatima Yanusa, over constant nagging.

Aliyu, 40, a civil servant, had on Aug. 4, urged the court to dissolve the marriage because his wife nags a lot and stones him whenever they had misunderstanding.

"I have done my best to provide a comfortable life for my wife but her attitude causes a lot of embarrassment to me and I am left with no choice but to seek divorce.

"I attempted to reconcile, but it did not work out and I am tired of being patience on this issue. She hid my land and refrigerator receipts, she also sold my cushions worth N40, 000 without my consent,’’ Aliyu said.

He said that the marriage was contracted in 2003 and had produced three children.

Fatima had told the court to grant her husband request.

"Please grant his request because he is a liar and a cheat whom I cannot stay with. On several occasions he travels to Sokoto to see another woman without my knowledge and leaves my children and I without food.

"I have been enduring his lies but since he wants a divorce then it is okay with me I will not object to it.

"I want him to promise that he will be paying the children's school fees and their upkeeps,’’ she said.

The court presided over by Musa Onuwa, therefore, dissolved the marriage because the couples had concluded plans to go their separate ways.

Onuwa said that having dissolved the marriage, either of the couple was free to remarry any person of their choice.

He also ordered that Fatima must stay in the house to complete her Iddah (A waiting period a woman must observe after divorce) for three months according to Islam rite before she can leave.
